Academic Support (Educational Sp)  Library Services, Desktop Network Services, Hamilton Library
Position Number: 0078891T   Band: A Minimum Monthly Salary:  $3,057;
Additional Salary Information: ($1,528.50 half-time) 12 Month, Half-Time (.50 FTE),
Temporary - Not to Exceed June 30, 2010 Federal funds, to begin approximately July 2009.

Duties and Responsibilities: Responsible for coordination of all program operations for National Digital Newspaper Project digitization project, e.g. microfilm preparation procedures, quality review practices, tracking systems, progress report creation, etc. Perform quality review on the digital images, text, PDF products and metadata returned from vendor using existing techniques and/or procedures to ensure product meets project specifications. Use specialized Digital Viewer and Validator software (DVV). Collect and maintain statistics on production, work with guidance from the Web Support Librarian to add information to web site(s) that document progress, policies and procedures. Responsible for ensuring that microfilm reel and digital file shipments between vendor amd Library of Congress are received and returned in timely and appropriate manner, e.g. by maintaining an accurate tracking system. Use standard library databases and information to verify master microfilm locations, evaluate and record quality of microfilm using standard tools such as densitometer and microscope. Review and analyze microfilm reels according to project requirements to calculate pages per issue and number of pages to be processed, discern and record variations and inconsistencies, e.g. missing, out of sequence or incorrectly paginated items. Review, analyze and document information about structural elements of microfilm (e.g. splices, targets), content variation such as change in orientation or reduction ratio and physical aspects relevant to project criteria. Responsible for management of day-to-day workflow & tracking of all phases of project, e.g., shipments of microfilm to digitization/text-conversion vendor, shipments of digital files to Library of Congress (LC), quality review. Coordinate transactions between vendors and cooperating institutions and resolve discrepancies or unforeseen complications to ensure grant technical objectives and time tables are met. Examine and verify metadata files to insure all information is present and correctly encoded, resolve/rectify errors reported after quality review. Initiate and create draft progress reports using data from tracking system, analyses & documentation for submission to grant funding institution by established due dates. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a baccalaureate degree in in information technology, library or museum studies, journalism, photography, history, conservation/preservation or related field and 0 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for N/A; or equivalent education/training or experience. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in digitization projects (preferably newspaper related) and/or microfilm digitization and/or digital collection creation demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with digitization/digital reformatting. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the course of digital conversion projects. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications: Experience with systems that use cataloging and/or metadata description. Experience working in an academic library and/or in a collaborative environment in an institution of higher education or similar organization. Aptitude and ability to perform work that requires strong visual acuity, ability to distinguish fine image patterns, esp. black/white/gray and consistent and exceptional attention to detail. Familiarity with newspaper or other text digitization projects. Education, training or experience with tracking or cataloging serial publications, esp. newspapers. Relevant experience in a library, archive, reprographic or digitization service bureau.

Instructional and Student Support (Educ & Acad Support Sp)  Library Services, Sinclair Library
Position Number: 0079001   Band: A Minimum Monthly Salary:  $3,057
12 Month, Full Time, Permanent General funds, to begin approximately July 2009.

Duties and Responsibilities: Work directly with the Director of the Student Success Center (SSC) to advance the mission of the SSC to provide academic and informational support to students that will aid student learning. Assess SSC activities to evaluate its efficacy in contributing to student satisfaction, learning and retention. Work independently and as part of a team to develop rubrics and design testing and or survey instruments to measure effectiveness of student learning services and information literacy instruction conducted by Librarians and the SSC. Write and review instructional, marketing and informational material for the SSC. Develop spreadsheet-based management system for collecting and organizing assessment data to help determine short and long term goals for learning services offered by the Library and the SSC. Provide instructional curriculum support to library faculty who teach library learning programs. Assist in the development and delivery of virtual on-demand learning programs and services. Research, identify, assess and report new learning programs and services for possible SSC integration through a process of habitual university program and curriculum review. Work directly with the Student Learning Programs & Services Librarian and/or the Director of the SSC in the management of new learning programs, teaching assistance, instructional materials design, and classroom assessment mechanisms. Work with UHM departments to market the SSC services and Library Services. Includes researching, writing brochures, and developing training and promotional materials to increase the use of learning programs and services. Supervise and coach student assistants and staff to provide outstanding public service and support instructional and information services. Other duties as assigned.

Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software. Functional knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in curriculum design, instructional design demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply concepts, terminology. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and systems associated with teaching and learning and broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Desirable Qualifications: Some knowledge and experience of various stages of program assessment including design of assessment tools, data collection and analysis. Some experience working cross-platform between Mac and Window environments. Understanding of statistical analysis. Coursework in Educational Technology

The Library:The University of Hawai'i Library has a staff of 143 full time employees and a collection of 3 million volumes. The materials budget approaches $5 million. It is a member of ARL and RLG. It uses OCLC and RLIN as bibliographic resources and the Endeavor Voyager automated library system for all public online catalog and processing functions.

Did you know that Hamilton Library or Sinclair Library employ up to 300 students? Be cool and work for us! To apply for a job at either library, you'll need to check your eligibility at the UH Student Employment Office. On the next page, click on the "login HERE" in the top right corner. Then look for the "Students" area and login using your UH logon and password. Then click on "Am I eligible to work?" in the top left corner.

Once the employment office verifies your status as a student within the UH system, search SECE's website for library jobs. To find these - once you've logged in, enter Oahu as the island, UH Manoa as the other location, and then enter "Library" as the category.
