THE LIBRARY:The
University
of Hawai'i Library has a staff of 143 full time employees and
a collection of 3 million volumes. The materials budget approaches $5
million. It is a member of ARL and RLG. It uses OCLC and RLIN as
bibliographic resources and the Endeavor Voyager automated library
system for all public online catalog and processing functions.

Duties: Responsible for coordination of all
program operations for National Digital Newspaper Project digitization
project, e.g. microfilm preparation procedures, quality review practices,
tracking systems, progress report creation, etc. Perform quality review on
the digital images, text, PDF products and metadata returned from vendor
using existing techniques and/or procedures to ensure product meets
project specifications. Use specialized Digital Viewer and Validator
software (DVV). Collect and maintain statistics on production, work with
guidance from the Web Support Librarian to add information to web site(s)
that document progress, policies and procedures. Responsible for ensuring
that microfilm reel and digital file shipments between vendor amd Library
of Congress are received and returned in timely and appropriate manner,
e.g. by maintaining an accurate tracking system. Use standard library
databases and information to verify master microfilm locations, evaluate
and record quality of microfilm using standard tools such as densitometer
and microscope. Review and analyze microfilm reels according to project
requirements to calculate pages per issue and number of pages to be
processed, discern and record variations and inconsistencies, e.g.
missing, out of sequence or incorrectly paginated items. Review, analyze
and document information about structural elements of microfilm (e.g.
splices, targets), content variation such as change in orientation or
reduction ratio and physical aspects relevant to project criteria.
Responsible for management of day-to-day workflow & tracking of all phases
of project, e.g., shipments of microfilm to digitization/text-conversion
vendor, shipments of digital files to Library of Congress (LC), quality
review. Coordinate transactions between vendors and cooperating
institutions and resolve discrepancies or unforeseen complications to
ensure grant technical objectives and time tables are met. Examine and
verify metadata files to insure all information is present and correctly
encoded, resolve/rectify errors reported after quality review. Initiate
and create draft progress reports using data from tracking system,
analyses & documentation for submission to grant funding institution by
established due dates.
Minimum qualifications:
Baccalaureate degree in in
information technology, library or museum studies, journalism,
photography, history, conservation/preservation or related field. Or
equivalent education/training or experience.
Functional knowledge of
principles, practices and techniques in digitization projects (preferably
newspaper related) and/or microfilm digitization and/or digital collection
creation demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply
concepts, terminology.
Functional knowledge and understanding of
principles, theories, federal and state laws, rules, regulations and
systems associated with digitization/digital reformatting.
Demonstrated
ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve the
full range problems that may commonly occur in the course of digital
conversion projects.
Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written
documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively
in a variety of situations.
Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with internal and external organizations,
groups, team members and individuals.
Demonstrated ability to operate a

Experience with systems that use

Duties: Under the direction of the
The Korea Specialist Librarian will provide professional librarian
support to the reference, collection development and bibliographic instruction
activities of the Asia Collection, particularly related to material about Korea.
This position works with the faculty and students at the University of Hawaii who study
and research Korea. Close contact is maintained with faculty who teach
Korea-related subjects. This position provides professional reference
service at the Asia Collection reference desk as scheduled and responds to
questions and requests for information and research assistance from
faculty, students, and the general public. The librarian frequently
provides in-depth personal consultation to researchers and students who
require it. The librarian in this position works collegially with the
other area specialists in the Asia Collection, is actively involved in
departmental affairs, and participates in library-wide activities. The
Korea Specialist librarian offers specialized bibliographic instruction to
students in Asian Studies, Korean Studies, and others with needs for such
instruction. The librarian works in cooperation with other Asia Collection
librarians and the teaching faculty to develop specially tailored
instructional programs and prepares specialized bibliographic guides in
print and online to aid in instruction. Collection development
responsibilities include examining newly published materials in all
formats related to Korea in humanities and social sciences subject areas
and making decisions regarding which publications to purchase or make
available for the library. Knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of
the collection and teaching and research interests at the University of
Hawaii are essential to performing this task. The Korea Specialist
librarian works with Korean publishers and is expected to be knowledgeable
about Korean publishing trends. The librarian participates at the national
level with other Korea specialists and in consortia. The librarian in this
position is expected to be familiar with recent developments in
information technology, should be competent in web page development and
maintenance, and knowledgeable about digitization and its application to
libraries.
Minimum qualifications:
Librarian II: ALA accredited MLS or international equivalent.
Librarian III: In addition to the MLS, minimum of three years of post-MLS
experience in a research library. Twenty-four post baccalaureate credits of academic study
in an Asia-related field.

research material, work with English language materials, and romanize
Korean characters. Excellent English-language communication skills.

Librarian III or IV, Head of Acquisitions, position number 82676, UHM

Duties: This position oversees monographic acquisitions functions for an
ARL-level library with an annual monographic materials budget of over $1
million. This position reports directly to the Head of Collection Services
and oversees nine paraprofessional staff members. Responsibilities include
management of monographs acquisitions, ordering and receiving of materials
invoicing for resources, processing and tracking fund expenditures, vendor
relations, gifts & exchange, and staff supervision. Acquisitions is a key
function in the library and this department head works collaboratively
with many other librarians outside the Collection Services Division
including selectors for the general collections and those purchasing
materials for special collections. The Hamilton Library is a rapidly
changing environment and its Head of Acquisitions is expected to develop
expertise with emerging technologies and lead and/or participate in
innovative library projects.
Minimum qualifications: Librarian III:
ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent. Minimum three years of
appropriate professional academic library experience. Twenty-four post
baccalaureate credits of academic study.
Librarian IV: In addition to the
MLS, a second masters degree in a subject area. At least seven years of
appropriate experience, including technical services.

functions with increasingly responsible work assignments. Successful
