Tuesday, November 10, 2009 - 5:30-7:00pm - Hamilton Library, Room 301
Cheryl Beredo chronicles the establishment and growth of the Bureau of Archives, a part of the United States’ goverment in the Philippines. Exploring its rich, complex, and understudied history within the context of the colonial administration in the islands, Beredo, an archivist by training, asks: "If roads brought economic development of the Philippines, schools molded model citizens, civil service trained skilled laboreres, and a bicameral legislature transformed natives into self-governable subjects, what did the state archive offer?"
A graduate of Cornell University and the University of Pittsburgh, Ms. Beredo is completing her doctorate in American Studies at the University of Hawai’i. She worked as an archivist at Cornell and Harvard universities and was a fellow at the Massachusetts Historical Society. Over the past year, she conducted archival research in the Philippines and the continental U.S.
Co-sponsored by the Association of Hawaii Archivists, Museum Studies Graduate Certificate Program, and UHM Library.
Manoa MAGIS of the UH-Manoa Library is pleased to announce that we will

Manoa Campus.

Details as follows:
First Speaker, 9.30 am
Title: Role of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the Social
Sciences-some applications.
Speaker: Shriram Bhutada, GIS Specialist, Extension Faculty, Center on
the Family, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
There has been growing interest in application of GIS in social sciences
recently. The intent of this presentation is to provide an introduction
to the role of GIS in social sciences. GIS can play various roles in
social science research such as geovisualization, spatiotemporal
analysis, information integration and geographically weighted
regression. Some examples of GIS projects will also be discussed.
Additionally, the audience will be introduced to geocoding and custom
geocoding programming along with a list of available GIS and non-GIS
data sources.
Second Speaker, 11 am
Title: Global Positioning System - GPS 101
Speaker: Karyn Nolan, President, Pacific GPS.
This presentation will give an overview of basic GPS principles
including sources of error, GPS settings, accuracy requirements and
differential correction (real time and post processed). We will focus on
Trimble Mapping and GIS hardware and software and also discuss
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) integration.
We look forward to seeing you there!
The Government Documents Department, temporarily housing their
collection at Sinclair Library, has been negotiating with a
fumigation company. Their collection must be fumigated prior to
transporting the collection to Hamilton Library which is scheduled
during the 1st and 2nd week in December.
Therefore, Sinclair Library Building will be closed to all UH
personnel including non-library departments and the general public
from Wednesday, November 25, 2009, 4:00pm to Saturday, November
28th at 12:00pm or until the all clear is given.
In order to work within the latest reduction in funding the Sinclair Library will move from a 24/7 operation to a 24/5 operation.
We have planned this reduction in such a way that it will impact the fewest number of our valued patrons. We have tracked the usage of our facility for years and we know when our lowest usage occurs. Using that information we established the following hours beginning October 1, 2009.
BUILDING HOURS
Sunday noon to Friday 6 p.m. -- OPEN CONTINUOUSLY
Saturday -- Noon to 6:00 p.m.
WONG AUDIOVISUAL CENTER
Monday to Thursday -- 8:00 a.m. to 7:45 p.m.
Friday – 8:00 a.m. to 5:45
Saturday and Sunday -- Noon to 5:45 p.m.
Please note that Sinclair WILL be open for six (6) hours on Saturday while Hamilton Library will be closed.
Be sure to arrange your study time accordingly. If you plan ahead you can request to have books from Hamilton Library sent to Sinclair Library for Saturday pick up. Please allow at least 1-1/2 days for this transaction.
Due to a mold outbreak, books with call numbers beginning PR, PS, PT, and PZ must be paged. Locate the record for the book you want in the Hawaii Voyager library catalog. Then use the Get This Item feature to request the book. Or, you may go to the Circulation Desk and ask to have a hold placed on the item. The book should be available for you to pick up at the Circulation Desk within five (5) days. You will be notified by email when the book is ready to pick up.

For the
past several weeks the Sinclair Library Preservation Team, supervised
by Melissa Arakawa, has been working diligently matching and sorting
old shelving and frames. The team sorted, packed, palletized and
wrapped over 50 pallets of materials in preparation for their journey
to the south pacific island of Palau, Saipan and Ponapei.
The collaboration of
this labor-intense project and partnership between the Sinclair Library
Team, State Representative Glenn Wakai, and the organization Reach Out
Pacific (REPAC). REPAC acquires donations of school supplies,
equipment, and toys for children in the elementary schools throughout
the islands of the Pacific. They also work with hospitals and clinics
on these islands to provide supplies they need. This past weekend REPAC
starting dropping off all their donations to prepare for Thursday and
Friday, July 30 and 31, when the three 40 foot Matson containers
arrived at Sinclair Library parking lot at 6:00 a.m. to begin loading
the pallets of shelving and miscellaneous items for our neighbors in
the Pacific.
Thanks to Melissa and
her team, Masa Inoue, Taylor Donovan, Sara Fagin, Ken Chan, Dave Bowman
and the assistance of volunteers Claire Schultz, Jennifer Megahan, and
Gregg Geary from the Sinclair Library Staff and friends. Thanks to the
cooperation of all these people this project was very successful and we
are pleased to have the opportunity to help others in need.
Please be
advised that during the week of July 13th - 17th, an upgrade to Hawaii
Voyager, the UHM Library online catalog, will cause a disruption in
some of the Voyager services. Though users will be able to search for
items held in the libraries, they will not be able to register their UH
ID or update their account information. No new patron accounts can be
created during this time. In addition patrons will not be able to login
or view their Voyager accounts nor renew materials.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
