Introduction
The Digital Archive Collections at the
University of Hawai'i at Manoa
Library include historical and cultural material in digital form, made
accessible via the World Wide Web. Some projects were funded in part or
in full by grants. Grant applications,
reports and Web statistics related to specific digital
imaging projects are available. Many other projects were started and/or
completed by the efforts of students working in Library and
Information Studies Program Internships. This page lists
scanned material from Archives and Manuscript collections, the Asia
Collection, art works from the Jean Charlot Collection, resources
related to Hawai'i and Pacific culture and history and material from
the Rare collection.

Annexation Of Hawai'i: A Collection Of Documents
Digitized reports and debates from the late 19th and early 20th
centuries related to the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom and the
annexation of Hawai'i. Including the Blount Report and the
Anti-annexation Petitions.
Asia At Work - Images from Books Within the vast body of literature on Asia held by the Asia Collection at the University of Hawaii are fascinating illustrations of the people of Asia and the environment in which they live. These images are a visual record of the lives of the people and their surroundings.
Bob Krauss Research Index In 2006 the Hawaiian Collection received the private research index created by the late Bob Krauss, longtime columnist for the Honolulu Advertiser and commentator on cultural, social, historical, and political developments in Hawaii. The index is by no means comprehensive in subject or time coverage. It largely reflects Krauss's research interests. Nonetheless it provides critical starting points into Hawaii's newspaper literature, covering periods of time and subjects in newspaper titles that have been formally indexed nowhere else. Transcription of the index is underway as of spring 2007.
Chaplain Hiro Higuchi Correspondence During World War II, Hiro Higuchi of Hawaii volunteered to serve as one of two chaplains attached to the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, an all-Japanese American unit formed in January 1943. While serving with the 442nd RCT, Chaplain Higuchi wrote frequent letters to his wife Hisako reassuring her of his safety and documenting his experiences and impressions of the war. His descriptive letters provide insight into the mindset and experiences of the soldiers of the 442nd RCT and the nature of military life in World War II.
Dakin Fire Insurance Maps: Honolulu (1891, 1899, 1906) Fire insurance maps of Honolulu, Hawaiian Islands surveyed for the Board of Fire Underwriters of Honolulu. M.D. Monsarrat and Alfred Richard Gurrey, survey inspectors.
Donald Angus Botanical Prints Donald Angus' collection of botanical prints are housed at the Bishop Museum, Foster Gardens, the National Tropical Botanical Garden, and the University of Hawai'i at Manoa Hamilton Library. These exquisite illustrations were published in monographs and journals mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries. They reflect the enthusiasm of scientists, and the popularity of the exotic flora being introduced and cultivated in European botanical gardens.
Fifty Years as a Center of Our Lives: College/University of Hawaii, 1907-1957 An exhibit documenting the early years of the Manoa campus and focusing upon the role the University played in the lives of students, faculty and staff. Created as part of the Archives contribution to and celebration of the upcoming Centennial of the University.
Filipino Workers in Hawaii, 1926 "Photographs in Connection with the Investigation of Working Conditions of Filipino Laborers on Hawaiian Sugar Plantations, 1926," by Lt. Colonel Robert A. Duckworth-Ford; collection is from Alex Ford of California; titles taken from typed captions on each photograph.
Hawaii Congressional Papers: Senator Hiram Fong Exhibit An exhibit honoring Sen. Hiram L. Fong as 2002 recipient of the UH Founders' Lifetime Achievement Award was featured in the bridge gallery of Hamilton Library. The display showcased some of the fascinating memorabilia from Sen. Fong's campaign trail; his important legislative issues; and school days at the University of Hawaii.
Hawaii War Records Depository (HWRD) is an extensive collection of archival materials that document life in Hawaii during World War II. The Territorial Legislature of 1943 authorized the University of Hawaii Library to collect materials to document the impact of the war upon Hawai'i and its populace. The collection includes approximately 1,325 photographs.
Hawai'i War Records - U.S. Army Signal Corps Photographs includes 880 photographs taken by the U.S. Army Signal Corps and the U.S. Navy between 1941 and 1946. They depict Army and Navy activities in Hawaii and illustrate the military's relationship with Hawaii's civilian population.
Hawaiian Language Newspapers Images of Hawaiian language newspapers published from 1834 to 1948. Includes stories, chants, photographs, advertisements, political notices, letters to the editor. Documents a unique period in history and presents the Hawaiian view of events, genealogy and culture.
Hawaiian Photo Album The Hawaiian collection contains a number of photograph albums and miscellaneous collections of photos. Most are incompletely identified however the images are of historical and research interest. Scanning of the images is underway as of spring 2007.
Japanese American Veterans Collection - National Archives Documents Relating to the 442nd RCT The 442nd Veterans Club in Honolulu sponsors an ongoing project in which volunteers copy documents located in the National Archives that relate to the activities of the 442nd Regimental Combat team during World War II.
Jean Charlot Murals and Sculpture The Jean Charlot Collection is an archive of art works relating to the artist and writer Jean Charlot and to those with whom he came in contact in France, Mexico, the United States and the Pacific. A selection of scanned slide images held in the Jean Charlot collection have been digitized. Murals featured are frescoes unless otherwise indicated.
José Guadalupe Posada In 1921 the young French artist Jean Charlot, then working as a muralist in Mexico City, encountered the broadsides of José Guadalupe Posada. Charlot's enthusiasm for Posada resulted in the assembly of an extensive personal collection of Posada's art. This collection includes digital images from slides of cover illustrations produced by Posada to illustrate a series of pamphlets for children on the history of Mexico.
Lian Huan Hua Chinese Picture Story Books Lian Huan Hua literarily means "linked serial pictures." They are pocket sized picture-story books first published by a Shanghai publisher in the 1920s. Lian huan hua is also commonly known as Xiao ren shu, children's book for their simplicity and heraldic subjects. In the early 1920s, lian huan hua first appeared mainly as adaptations of Jingju (Peking Opera) and Chinese literary classics. The pictures were created mostly in line drawings, sketches, and oil-wash painting. After the People's Republic of China (PRC) was founded in 1949, lain huan hua became an extremely popular art form and was used to popularize new government policies and regulations. From 1951 to 1956, more than 10,000 titles, and approximately 26 billion copies were published in China.
Local Sightings/Citings Online project created at The Center for Teaching Excellence, funded by an Educational Improvement Fund (EIF) grant from the Office of the President of the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The project focuses on a specific period of time in the history of Hawai'i - the early Territorial period, from 1898 - 1933. We located primary sources, textual and graphic, which can be integrated into a teaching manual. The goal is to raise questions and engender in the users/viewers of the materials a desire to take seriously the challenge to recover and rediscover the history of this place.
Magic Lantern Slides Collection from Japan
Produced in
the late 1800's and early 1900's; some were exhibited in the Treasures
from
the Library show in 2005. The slides were donated by the
grandchildren
of Reverend Takie Okumura, a local spiritual leader and founder of
Makiki Christian Church, established 1904, as well as the Okumura Boys
and Girls Home (originally called Okumura's Christian Home) established
in 1901.

Margo Duggan Collection: Slides of Micronesia and Hawai´i, 1949-1954 Margo Duggan served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II, from 1943 through 1945. In late 1949 she began work as a civilian employee of the United States Trust Territories Administration. Between 1949 and 1954, she worked on or visited a number of locations in the Marshall, Mariana, and Caroline Islands, as well as in Hawai´i. Her photographs document an important moment in the history of Micronesia, as the various island nations emerged from the life and death struggles of World War II and began the process of redefining their political status.
Oliver Statler Collection is the accumulated materials that were the basis for the scholarly writings of Oliver Statler, most notably, Japanese Inn, Japanese Pilgrimage, and Shimoda Story. The collection includes correspondence, research notes, manuscripts, source materials, brochures, clippings, postcards, maps, art prints, photographs, slides, films, audiotapes and more.
Opium in Asia - Images from Books Within the vast body of literature on Asia held by the Asia Collection at the University of Hawaii are fascinating images related to opium usage in Asia. These images are a visual record of the impact opium has had on Asian peoples during certain historical times.
Rapanui: the Edmunds/Bryan Photograph Collection, 1904-1929 Henry P. Edmunds and William A. Bryan were both photographers who shared the experience of Rapanui, or Easter Island, during the early 1900s. Both of them took remarkable photographs documenting Rapanui's archaeological wonders and everyday life, and some of these fascinating images are presented here.
Russian Passport Album The album contains the passport applications for 165 people who wished to leave Hawaii and return to Russia. Every person was required to submit a photograph, and details on where and when they were born, what work they did, year and name of ship on which they came to Hawaii,etc. The images of the album pages are accompanied by an image of the text transcribed in Russian and an abbreviated English translation.
Save Our Surf (SOS) a collection of unpublished material from the SOS organization begun by John Kelly, including posters, flyers, articles, petitions, etc. SOS was an environmental, social, political, and cultural association that contributed to the contemporary Hawaiian Sovereignty movement.

Shackford Collection of photographs of China These photographs were taken during the late 1920s and early 1930s by William Shackford during his travels and tenure as an English teacher in southern China.
Social Movements Collection Pamphlets, brochures, and periodicals about the labor movement in the United States as well as global radical political movements, including anarchism, communism, and fascism. Acquired from Eugene Bechtold, a bookseller and former instructor at the Chicago Worker’s School; the collection also includes items from the collection of John Reineke.
South East Asia Posters This website was created in late 2006 and is dedicated to digitizing posters from countries in the South East Asia region.
Steve Thomas Traditional Micronesian Navigation Collection is comprised of unpublished papers, audiovisual and photographic materials (including oral history transcripts and 35mm slides), publications and miscellaneous items related primarily to traditional navigation on the island of Satawal Island, Yap. 1866 color slides have been digitized.
TRAIL-Technical Report Archive and Image Library is a collaborative project to digitize, archive, and provide persistent and unrestricted access to federal technical reports issued prior to 1975. Organizations involved in this pilot site are libraries in the Greater Western Library Alliance (GWLA - http://www.gwla.org) and the Center for Research Libraries (CRL - http://www.crl.edu).
Treasures of Okinawa: Frank Hawley Collection Regarded as one of the rarest and the largest known collection of Ryukyu/Okinawa ancient manuscripts, maps, scrolls, and prints. To celebrate the first Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in Hawai'i, this digital exhibit of selected materials from the Hawley Collection was created.
Trust Territory Photo Archives The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands included the Micronesian archipelagoes of the Marshalls, Carolines and Marianas during the U.S. administrative period from 1947 to 1994. The archive contains over 52,000 photographs and visually document nearly 50 years of the U.S. administration’s programs in education, health, political and economic development.
University of Hawaii Masao Miyamoto Photographs Miyamoto began his career as official University photographer in April 1936. In the course of the next forty-one years, he photographed and collected approximately 70,000 negatives of a wide variety of events and people associated with the University of Hawaii. The collection was placed in the Library Archives in 1991. Only a small sample of images have been digitized.
XXth Century, Shanghai, 1941-1945 Published monthly beginning in October 1941 until its final issue in June 1945. PDF images of the articles are being linked to the index prepared by Eric Bott for University of Hawaii Professor John J. Stephan’s seminar on Klaus Mehnert (editor-in-chief of the journal).

Institute for Museum & Library Services, 1998 "Project To Create and Expand Digital Databases for Three Collections in the University of Hawai’i at Manoa Libraries" In support of this aspect of the Library’s Strategic Plan, three strong candidates for expanded digitization initiatives were identified. The project intent was to create a foundation for building a digital library of Hawaiian and Pacific resources and provide access to unique primary source materials.

This project proposes to
digitize (image, convert to text, and mark-up) and submit to the
Library of Congress National Digital Newspaper Project important
English language newspapers that have historically provided statewide
(and prior to annexation to the United States, country wide) coverage
and which have had significant influence on the archipelago.
National Leadership Grant, Institute for Museum & Library Services 2007-2008 The University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) Library, in collaboration with the Hawai'i State Land Survey Division and the Hawai'i State Archives, proposes to digitize approximately 1,800 registered survey maps from a collection of slightly more than 3,000 during the one-year grant period, and make them publicly accessible on the web.
National Leadership Grant, Institute for Museum & Library Services 2007-2008 The University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) Library, in collaboration with the Hawai'i State Land Survey Division and the Hawai'i State Archives, proposes to digitize approximately 1,800 registered survey maps from a collection of slightly more than 3,000 during the one-year grant period, and make them publicly accessible on the web.

Institute for Museum & Library Services, 1998 "Project To Create and Expand Digital Databases for Three Collections in the University of Hawai’i at Manoa Libraries" In support of this aspect of the Library’s Strategic Plan, three strong candidates for expanded digitization initiatives were identified. The project intent was to create a foundation for building a digital library of Hawaiian and Pacific resources and provide access to unique primary source materials.
