Library Instruction Mission Statement
The Library is dedicated to the promotion of scholarship and research by providing all members of the University community with a comprehensive program of instruction, including lectures, demonstrations, active-learning activities, WebCT modules, and more, tailored to meet individual and group needs at all levels. Our primary goal is the attainment of information literacy for all students, faculty, and staff members.
The Library encourages collegiality and collaboration between Instructional faculty and Library Reference and Instruction faculty. Instructional faculty members are invited to work with library instruction staff in designing course-related assignments that include information literacy objectives. The Program incorporates a variety of teaching strategies and methodologies that reflect individual differences in learning level, style, and culture.
The UH Manoa Libraries offer a
variety of instructional services to UH students, faculty, and staff. We teach
the concepts and skills needed for successful library and online research. Library
Instructional Services are tailored to meet group and individual needs, and meet
the following objectives: how information is created and disseminated how
to locate needed information in the library and on the Web; how to determine if
the information retrieved is useful, truthful, and relevant for the immediate
need; and how to use information ethically, and properly cite it in your
research. [

Learning Information Literacy Online (LILO)
LILO provides a thorough introduction to the process of writing a college level research paper or report by guiding users through a series of six modules, providing the research and evaluation basics you need in as few words as possible. Review the content of each module, and apply what you have learned to complete your assignment.
The LILO Research Journal feature enables a student to better understand the research process by recording important information about the topic during the various steps of the process. Journal content allows instructors and librarians to review a student's progress and offer advice when needed. Answers can be revised, saved and reviewed in your Journal as often as you wish.
Basic Library Research Handbook
An introduction to library research,
The Basic Library Research Handbook exposes students to the concepts and skills necessary to find information using the appropriate tools. It is self-paced and intended to be a resource that students can turn to for library research methods. The Handbook was developed and is maintained by Hamilton Library's BHSD (Business, Humanities, and Social Sciences Department).
The handbook may be downloaded in a variety of formats from this URL:

Discipline Focused Instruction
Instructional faculty are encouraged
to bring students to the Library's electronic classrooms for an introduction to
discipline-specific reference and periodical literature sources. Librarians
can tailor sessions (with time for hands-on work) to meet the needs of students
and instructors. Librarians create print guides for in-class distribution and
make materials available on the Web. We offer classes with a special
focus on the research skills needed for course assignments and presentations.
Faculty and students are invited to bring in research ideas to class and work
with librarians to develop systematic research strategies guaranteed to work.
LIS 100: Libraries, Scholarship, and Technology
Offered by library faculty in the
Fall and Spring semesters, this three-credit course introduces students to the
major elements of scholarship and the nature of investigation. Students will learn
how knowledge is created and disseminated in academic environments. Students will
also develop an understanding of relevant information technology such as database
structure, search query formation, and retrieval protocols. The course concentrates on making students fully "information literate"*
by providing a foundation for mastering search and analytical skills crucial for advanced information inquiry. The course also meets the requirements for technology and writing intensive designations, and was the recipient of the 2001 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Instruction Section (IS) Innovation in Instruction Award. Contact the
Student Learning Programs and Services Librarian (956-3750) for more information about this award-winning course.
*"Information literacy" has been championed
by librarians nationwide as a set of competencies that everyone should have to
get the most from the online world. The American Library Association defines information
literacy the ability "to recognize when information is needed and have the
ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information."
Outreach
Library faculty provide a wide range of instruction lectures, talks,
demonstrations, department tours, and hands-on activities for any agency of the
University. We also provide instructional support to UH distance education and
online courses. Contact the
Student Learning Programs and Services Librarian (956-3750) for Information Literacy/IT skills training.
